in this installment of my life i was determined to use my degree in mandarin chinese, as well as my spanish and my love of language in general, as a source of income. i signed up to a few translation and interpretation agencies and accepted any jobs that came my way. the interpreting  jobs that came my way offered very little information beforehand so there was almost no way to prepare. be at this place at this time was all they would say. i would try to help people, the criminals and the victims and witnesses, and make them understand and be understood, but i soon realised with horror that they saw me as part of the state, and part of the machine: i was working for the police.
